CHAPTER FOUR

As usual when she went to the library, Hannah wore a pair of English style trousers and a button down shirt that she had bought at the town’s local thrift store. She considered it her Englisch uniform, something that allowed her to blend in, even with her hair still pinned up tightly beneath her prayer kapp. She stood, browsing the magazines at the library, waiting for Mrs. Morrison to be free so that she could get her new books for the month when someone behind her said, “Hi.”

“Hi.” Hannah turned around to see who was greeting her. It was an English boy, about her own age, that she frequently saw at the library. Before today, he had never spoken to her, and she wondered what he wanted.

“My name is T.J.,” he said, folding his arms over his chest and lifting his chin up in a way that seemed posed.

“What does T.J. stand for?”

“Theodore Junior,” T.J. said. “What are you reading?” He looked at the selection she had placed on the table behind her. “Hmm! Sweet Valley High.” He looked back at her. “What is a nice girl like you doing reading such soppy stuff?”

Hannah frowned. “How do you know I’m a nice girl?”

Now his grin took on a darker cast. “Ooh, I like that.”

“Listen, I’m not anything like you’re thinking. I’m sure you have something you need to be doing.”

Now T.J. was blushing, which made him look a bit less obnoxious. “I’m sorry,” he said. “I didn’t mean to be rude. I’m just...you’re really pretty, you know that?”

Hannah averted her gaze. She didn’t like the boy, but the compliment warmed her. Was that a sin?

“And you haven’t told me your name.”

Hannah giggled nervously. “I’m sorry. My name is Hannah Yoder.”

“Well, Hannah Yoder, I am pleased to meet you.”

“Thank you.”

“Do you go to our school? Because I am sure I have seen you there,” T.J. said.

Hannah shook her head. “I don’t go to your school, whichever one it is.”

“Lancaster Public High. I am on the football team, and you must have heard about the Lancaster Tigers. We’re the best in our league.”

“Sorry, I have not.” Hannah was interested in athletics. “Do you have volleyball at your school?”

T.J. just shrugged; apparently, he either did not know or even if he did, he just did not care. “I’m really not into sports,” he said, as though admitting a great sin. “I’m in the drama club,” he said.

“Drama club?”

“We put on plays.”

“Like Romeo and Juliet!”

T.J. smiled. Now that he wasn’t trying so hard, he actually seemed kind of nice. “Yeah, we’ve done some Shakespeare.”

“That’s incredible!”

“What are you doing next Saturday evening?” T.J. asked her.

“Why?”

“We’re having a party.”

“I’m not interested in English parties.” She heard what happened at them. Not much, but rumors.

“It’s not that kind of party. Just some of the drama people. You’ll meet some nice people, dance a little. I bet you’re good at dancing.”

Hannah shrugged.

“You can bring some of your friends. I can fit up to four in my car. And if you don’t have fun, I’ll drive you home.
